A single large Fresnel lens captures the light of a live gas flame and projects it onto a wall, creating a vivid, continuously shifting visual experience. The flame’s movement is unpredictable, and the lens magnifies every detail, turning raw firelight into a living projection. Using only elemental materials, the work reconnects with the origins of photography and visual technology. There are no screens or electronics, only the direct mechanics of optics and light. Three platonic solid structures, a dodecahedron, a cube and a tetrahedron, are constructed from optical lenses and suspended in space. A single moving light travels through them, refracting into shifting focal points that become visible in the haze.Platonic solids are regular polyhedra, of which only five exist. Plato described them around 360 B.C., linking each to the elements of fire, water, air, and earth, while the dodecahedron was associated with the cosmos and the Zodiac. In 1619, Johannes Kepler illustrated the five solids in Harmonices Mundi, underlining their symbolic and mathematical significance. The sound, composed by Laura Kampman, moves in dialogue with the light, creating a rhythm that fills and defines the space. Together, image and sound form an environment that unfolds slowly, where movement and geometry merge into an atmospheric whole. The work brings ancient mathematical forms into a contemporary context, revealing their structural beauty through light and sound. Forms of Refraction was realised with the support of Patch Studios,&nbsp;Inga Hirsch,&nbsp;Maarten Keus, and&nbsp;Jacob Wallet. Yet within this noise lies something older: a faint trace of the earliest light in the universe. From Noise We Begin is a lens-based installation built around a large 100 cm Fresnel lens positioned in front of a CRT showing static. As visitors move through the corridor, the image bends, stretches and fractures, transforming the static into shifting fields of distortion. The work changes with every step and turns perception into a physical, spatial experience. It possesses captivating qualities that engulf all our senses and holds immense cultural significance. It embodies both illumination and warmth, as well as the potential for destruction, evoking feelings of both safety and danger, making it a fascinating subject to explore. Through experimental research and analog projection techniques, I have developed an installation that honours the sublimity of fire. Using fresnel lenses, I project images of dancing flames that submerge the environment, immersing the audience in its mesmerising glow. My intention is to kindle curiosity and instil a sense of wonder in the viewers, fostering a deep appreciation for nature and and the very essence of being. Let us celebrate the profound connection between art and nature, as we appreciate the raw power and duality of fire—representing both warmth and destruction, safety and peril. Driven by the theme of light and time, the simple yet well-considered texts invite the&nbsp;reader to introspect on the impermanence of existence and the constant flow of time.
